Challenging Halifax Chefs to Serve up Local Flavours

This February, food and wine enthusiasts will be able to experience everything Nova Scotia’s diverse dining scene has to offer, for a set price.

As a part of the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia’s Savour 2007 Dine Out Nova Scotia Promotion, the Departments of Agriculture and Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia (RANS), and Valley Wine Tours are promoting a "Chef's Challenge".

Dine Out Nova Scotia chefs will be asked to design and feature a special Nova Scotia inspired food and wine menu at their restaurants during the month of February. Dine Out Nova Scotia offers diners a three course meal with mouth-watering appetizers, outstanding entrees and sinful desserts - all at a fixed price menu of either $30 or $45 (price excludes beverages).

"Dine Out Nova Scotia gives diners the chance to sample fare from the province’s best establishments at unbelievably low prices," says Gordon Stewart, Executive Director of the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia. Similar promotions have been successful in other parts of Canada, including Vancouver and Toronto.

"The Chef’s Challenge creates an opportunity for our chefs to do some thing really special with their Dine Out menus, incorporating a local flavour to their menu and pairing this with Nova Scotia wines. It is going to be really exciting to see what our local talent comes up with," says Amanda Langley, Planning and Development Officer for the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture.

A panel of judges made up of a cross-section of industry professionals, including chef, wine industry representative, food writer, food critic, and a sponsor representative will evaluate the Chef’s Challenge participant’s menus, wine selection, presentation, and customer satisfaction surveys as part of the over all criteria in selecting the winner.

Valley Wine Tours co-owner Sean Buckland says, "Promotions such as the Chef’s Challenge create an ideal opportunity for diners to experience Nova Scotia wines at their best, paired with local flavours. I encourage everyone to try some of these menus out for themselves - I know I will!"

The Chef’s Challenge Halifax winner will be announced at the Savour Food and Wine Show at the Westin Nova Scotia Hotel on March 1st, 2007.

Dine Out Nova Scotia participants include over 40 restaurants across the province. The Chef’s Challenge is open to any participating restaurant located in metro. Langley says, "This is our first year, but we know that this will be the first of many and we hope to increase restaurant participation and make the Chef’s Challenge available to all participants in 2008."

Throughout the month of February, restaurant and industry suppliers across the province will host a variety of food and wine related activities. Wine and cheese tastings, beer seminars, pasta making, cooking lessons and a jazz brunch are just a few events to look forward to during the Savour Food & Wine Festival.
